Reaching the target population is an important aspect in addiction interventions and research. The first step is implementing an effective communication methodology to reach the target audience. An important communication methodology is the use of social media to reach the target audience through the desired matched channels (Arigo et al., 2018). Social media communication can allow for a large segment to be reached in the communication and also can ensure effective targeting. Therefore, drafting messages on social media and targeting the specific audience on the most influential platform is an effective approach to communication for effective access and engagement of the population.

Moreover, focus groups are a useful approach for involving stakeholders in addiction research. Focus groups are qualitative approaches that seek to capture in-depth discussions of themes and perceptions of participants. The dynamic is such that a facilitator creates a platform for discussion and moderates the discussion without necessarily providing a direction of the topic and themes (Hamilton & Finley, 2019). Therefore, this approach will be the preferred method to discuss addiction. Primarily, a community center will be the setting for the discussion. This is important to ensure accessibility for all participants and an environment that enhances free communication and collaboration. The technology to be used is a tape recorder which will be used for transcribing the discussion and the analysis phase.

Lastly, the focus group environment should promote engagement and productive discussions and the facilitator has a role to play in that. The focus group discussions should be held in a relaxed environment that allows very participant to feel free to willingly and openly express their opinion. For productive discussions, it is also necessary to establish ground rules before engaging in the discussion to clearly outline the objectives and structure of the discussion (Sim & Waterfield, 2019). These rules should be discussed and understood by all participants to ensure adherence, reduce conflict, and promote productivity. Similarly, the facilitator should pose open-ended questions and moderate discussions without actually participating. Open-ended questions evoke detailed discussions and diverse opinions and the facilitator?s neutrality encourages openness in each participant?s discussion. The focus group approach for addiction research will be a crucial step to gathering credible evidence.

When deciding on a target group, one has to refine the intended audience by listening to them and understanding their wants and longings. Many factors should be considered on content tailored to the intended audience (Sim, 2019). There may be little value in using jargon-laden terms if the audience lacks relevant expertise in the field. Secondly, through establishing an emotional connection, it is possible to ascertain “why.”?For instance, consider the information needed to be conveyed to the audience instead of relying on technical jargon that the audience does not understand (Sim, 2019). The ability to connect with the audience is essential to delivering a clear message and accomplishing the primary goal of the outreach.

Members of a focus group are invited to engage in a discussion on a particular topic. These organizations are founded on an interpretivist conceptual framework, which regards positivism as unsuited to any research that analyses persons, behavior, and opinions (Ngozwana, 2018). Alternatively, the focus group may be conducted in an informal location, such as a street corner, shopping mall, or another public venue. As a result, the group may experience less otherness since they are in a familiar situation.

With its emphasis on the group, a focus group allows for expressing various viewpoints, making it unique. Many people’s experiences can be mined, but the data may be enhanced because people engage with one another, allowing opinions to be reformed via trade, subtleties of meaning to be worked out, recollection reinforced (Ngozwana, 2018). Shy members build self-confidence and the vertical and horizontal interaction between interviewer and interviewee since they are gathered from a social setting. Moreover, traditional face-to-face focus groups and technology-enhanced focus groups are similar in their methods (Xerri, 2018). Group members may see and respond to the moderator’s remarks and other members in a virtual discussion room, but they cannot see each other in that room. Meeting participants are all logged in at once, allowing for direct, real-time communication among the group (Xerri, 2018). Some researchers have employed asynchronous technologies to circumvent time zone obstacles; this method may be effective when immediate contact is unnecessary.
